Apple pie bars

I cant put into words how delicious this is! Apple pie bars are exactly what it sounds like! Don’t come for me, but I think I might like the bars better than the pie. Apple pie bars are made from crisp fresh apples with notes of cinnamon and brown sugar. With a touch of roasted walnuts. This dessert is salty, sweet, nutty, buttery…should I keep going? or should I just get to the recipe? I know your impatient to find out how to make this, So ill get to it!

Fall is almost upon us my friends! This is absolutely my favorite time of the year. When everything around us starts to turn into lovely fall colors. Fall reminds us just how beautiful change can really be! I’m glad to introduce to you, your next obsession…Apple pie bars! This recipe is surprisingly easy to make.

Ingredients

Dough:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 sticks softened butter
  • 3/4 granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder

Apple filling:

  • 6 tart apples (granny smith)
  • 3 tbl granulated sugar
  • 2 tbl cinnamon
  • 3 tbl butter
  • 2 tbl heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup walnuts

Start with the dough

In a bowl with an electric mixer beat 3 sticks of softened butter with granulated sugar, brown sugar and vanilla. Mix it for 3 minutes till its light and fluffy. In a separate bowl mix the dry ingredients.

Once the butter and the sugars have combined. To easier incorporate the two together, add 1/3 of the flour mixture at a time to the butter. mix the two with a spatula. Put the bowl with the dough into the fridge to cool for 20 minutes.

While the dough is cooling, get your baking dish ready. Cover a deep baking sheet with parchment paper. It helps for the paper to stay in place if you crinkle the parchment paper first. Rub some butter on the parchment paper to help the dough from sticking.

Preheat the oven to 375f.

Once the dough has had a chance to cool, spread 2/3 of the mixture into the oven safe sheet pan. the rest of the 1/3 of the mixture, put it back into the fridge till we need it again. Bake the dough for 20 minutes.

While the sheet is baking, make the apple filling.

Roast the walnuts on a low heat for 5 minutes. Let them cool down.

Peel and chop the apples into slices. As you would for an apple pie.

Once all the apples are peeled and sliced, add them to a mixing bowl. To the bowl add the sugar, and cinnamon. Give them a toss.

Place a deep pan on medium heat, to it add 3 tbl of butter then dd the apples to the hot pan. Cook the apples for 12 minutes. After 12 minutes add 2 tbl of heavy cream. Bring to a soft boil. Once it reaches a boil, turn off the heat.

Once the bottom layer is done baking, evenly spread the apple filling on top of it, then sprinkle the roasted walnuts on top of the apples.

Take the rest of the dough out of the fridge, crumble the dough on top of the apples. Bake for for 25 minutes. Let it cool completely then cut into bars!
