Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks

Jump to Recipe

These crispy air fryer chicken drumsticks are crispy and golden on the outside and juicy inside. The first time I made them, my family couldn’t believe they came out of the air fryer! They have that delicious crunchy coating everyone loves, but they’re much easier to make and use way less oil than fried chicken.

Finished chicken: Crispy air fryer chicken drumsticks cooked until golden brown and juicy, garnished with fresh parsley and lemon wedges.

The recipe is really simple, too. Season the chicken, let it marinate in mayo or Greek yogurt, coat it in Italian breadcrumbs, and pop it into the air fryer. I like to marinate mine overnight when I have time, but even an hour makes the chicken so flavorful and tender.

This has quickly become one of those easy dinners I can throw together without putting much thought into it. Add mashed potatoes and a cucumber avocado and corn salad on the side and dinner is done!

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

There are so many air fryer recipes out there, but this one has become a favorite at our house for a few reasons.

First, chicken drumsticks are pretty hard to mess up. Since they’re dark meat, they stay tender and juicy while the outside gets nice and crispy.

You also don’t need a bunch of ingredients or oil. The mayo or Greek yogurt keeps the chicken moist and helps the breadcrumbs stick, so you get a really good crunchy coating without deep frying.

And if you marinate the chicken the night before, dinner the next day is SO easy. Just coat the drumsticks in breadcrumbs and put them straight into the air fryer.

Ingredients: Simple ingredients for air fryer chicken legs including chicken drumsticks, breadcrumbs, mayonnaise, garlic, paprika, seasonings, and fresh parsley.

Ingredients

  • Chicken drumsticks – You’ll need about 2 pounds. I try to choose chicken legs that are similar in size so they cook evenly.
  • Mayonnaise or Greek yogurt – Either one works! Mayo makes the chicken extra rich and juicy, while plain Greek yogurt is a great lighter option. Don’t worry, the finished chicken doesn’t taste like mayonnaise.
  • Italian-style breadcrumbs – I love using seasoned breadcrumbs because they give the chicken so much flavor without needing a complicated spice blend. Panko breadcrumbs work great too!
  • Mrs. Dash or Vegeta seasoning – Use whichever you have. Vegeta is something I grew up using and always have in my kitchen, but Mrs. Dash works great too.
  • Garlic – I use two fresh garlic cloves and crush them right into the marinade. If you don’t have fresh garlic, you can substitute garlic powder.
  • Paprika – This adds a little extra flavor and helps give the coating that beautiful golden color.
  • Salt and black pepper – Just enough to season the chicken and bring all those flavors together.

How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Legs

Start by placing 2 pounds of chicken drumsticks into a large bowl. Use paper towels to remove excess moisture.

Season the chicken with 2 teaspoons Mrs. Dash or Vegeta, 1 teaspoon fine sea salt, 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, 1/2 teaspoon paprika, and 2 crushed garlic cloves.

Add 1/2 cup mayonnaise or plain Greek yogurt and mix everything together until each piece of chicken is completely coated.

Cover the bowl and place it in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour. If you have time, leave it overnight. I actually prefer doing this because the chicken gets even more flavorful, plus there’s less work to do at dinnertime the next day.

Marinating: Chicken drumsticks coated in a creamy mayonnaise, garlic, and seasoning marinade before being refrigerated.

When you’re ready to cook, pour 1 cup of Italian-style breadcrumbs onto a large plate or platter.

Take one chicken leg at a time and roll it through the breadcrumbs. Gently press the breadcrumbs onto all sides of the chicken so you get a nice, even coating.

Breadcrumb coating: Marinated chicken drumsticks being coated in Italian-style breadcrumbs before cooking in the air fryer.

Place the chicken into your air fryer basket in a single layer. Leave a little space between each drumstick so the hot air can circulate around them. If your air fryer is smaller, just cook the chicken in two batches instead of trying to squeeze everything in.

Air fry at 380°F for about 22–28 minutes, flipping the chicken halfway through.

Since chicken legs can vary quite a bit in size and every air fryer cooks a little differently, I always check them with a meat thermometer. Insert it into the thickest part of the chicken without touching the bone. The internal temperature should reach at least 165°F.

If the chicken is cooked through but you want the outside a little more golden brown, leave it in the air fryer for another minute or two.

Tips for Crispy Chicken Legs

  1. The biggest tip I can give you is don’t overcrowd the basket. I know it’s tempting to squeeze one more piece in there, but leaving a little space between the chicken really does help the coating get crispy.
  2. I also wouldn’t skip the marinating time. One hour is enough, but overnight is even better. You can prep everything after dinner one night and have it waiting in the refrigerator for the next day.
  3. And you really don’t need to add much oil. That’s one of the reasons I love making chicken this way. The mayo in the marinade helps the breadcrumbs turn golden and crispy while keeping the meat underneath nice and juicy.

Can I Use Greek Yogurt Instead of Mayo?

Absolutely. I make these with both. Mayonnaise gives the chicken a slightly richer flavor and a really nice crispy coating, but plain Greek yogurt works great if that’s what you have in the refrigerator. Just make sure you’re using plain, unsweetened Greek yogurt. You don’t want vanilla yogurt accidentally making its way onto your chicken. 😂

What to Serve With Air Fryer Chicken Drumsticks

These chicken legs go with pretty much anything, which is another reason I love them for busy weeknights.

Mashed potatoes are probably my personal favorite because you have crispy chicken, creamy potatoes, and you’re basically guaranteed that everyone will be happy. But if your family prefers rice, this is my favorite Instant Pot rice recipe!

You could also serve them with roasted potatoes Greek salad, mac and cheese, corn, coleslaw, steamed vegetables, or a simple salad.

How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

If you have leftovers, let the chicken cool and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

When you’re ready to reheat it, put the chicken back into the air fryer for a few minutes until it’s warmed through and the outside is crispy again.

I prefer reheating these in the air fryer instead of the microwave because the microwave tends to soften that breadcrumb coating—and the crispy outside is the best part!

An Easy Air Fryer Dinner

If you need a new dinner to add to your busy weeknight rotation, definitely give these air fryer chicken drumsticks a try.

You only need a few simple ingredients; you can prep the chicken ahead of time, and the air fryer does most of the work for you.

My family thought I had made fried chicken the first time I served these because the outside was so crispy and golden. Meanwhile, I didn’t have a pot of oil sitting on my stove or a huge mess to clean up afterward, and these are a healthier alternative.

That’s my kind of dinner.
