GUT-HEALTHY BONE BROTH HOT CHOCOLATE INGREDIENTS

This recipe makes 2 servings

  • 1 1/2 cups of good-quality bone broth- pasture-raised bone broth. Free-range chicken bones are my absolute fave (you can add it to basically anything without it affecting the taste)
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk- You can use a milk of your choice, such as organic coconut milk, oat milk, unsweetened almond milk, or soy milk.
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream- French hot cocoa uses a little heavy cream to add some creaminess to each cup, which is delightful!
  • 1/4 cup of dark chocolate– Dark chocolate is rich in disease-fighting antioxidants. Studies show it can help reduce blood pressure and lower the risk of heart disease.
  • 2 tablespoons organic cacao powder – raw cocoa powder provides a rich chocolate flavor
  • 1/4 cup coconut sugar – or maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon organic vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon is my secret ingredient to add so much flavor to the hot chocolate; it helps mask the bone broth.

What are the health benefits of bone broth?

Bone broth offers many health benefits for gut, joints, and skin support.

1. Collagen

Collagen is a protein that structures the body’s skin, bones, tendons, and ligaments. Which may help repair joint damage and improve arthritis-related pain.

2. Supports Gut Health

Bone broth contains an amino acid called glutamine. Glutamine helps maintain the structure and function of tissue that lines your gastrointestinal tract. It may also reduce inflammation throughout the gut.

3. Contains High-Quality Protein

Bone broth tends to be richer in protein than a classic stock because the longer cooking time extracts more protein from the animal bones.

How To Make Homemade Bone Broth?

In a large stock pot, add the animal bones of your choice. I prefer chicken as it has the most mild flavor. Cover the bones with filtered water and a splash of apple cider vinegar. Boil the bones for 5 minutes, then discard all the water and rinse the bones under water to clean out any impurities that floated up. Add new water to the pot with the bones and bring it back to a boil. Turn the heat down to the lowest setting on your stove and cook the bones covered for 24 hours. You can use an instant pot or a slow cooker if you would like. Once the bone broth is done cooking, strain the liquid into jars and store it in the fridge or freezer.

Do not add any salt, garlic, onions, or veggies to the broth. You want to keep it as bland as possible if you use it for bone broth hot chocolate. You can, however, add a few cinnamon sticks to the broth if you would like!
